Brainstorming- Part 4

Everyone who had input at this brainstorming session should at least have a chance
to plead their case here, if they desire.

The people who elect to keep the idea and the people who elect to discard the idea should be heard.

Often this phase can be the most heated. The people who came up with the various ideas hate seeing them scratched off as being un-doable.

Although the evaluation phase is more serious than the no bad ideas Phase, it should still be kept as light and fun as possible.

The evaluation phase is the most natural for all the participants. Why? Because everyone's a critic, and it’s easy for critics to see why something can’t be done. Right?

It’s easy for critics to see why something won’t work. And it’s especially easy for critics to remember who failed at doing it in the past.

I urge you to be careful and not allow this phase to come down to a critics corner. It’s not only draining, it’s very non-productive when it comes to brainstorming. Focus on solutions, not problems.

In the evaluation phase, you’re looking for the ideas that are the most do-able ...

1. Financially (Do we have enough money).

2. Persoanel-wise (Do we have enough people to do it).

3. Equipment-wise (Do we have the right equipment to do it).

4. Goal-wise (Do they harmonize with our long range goals)

All the above goals should be considered when judging the most do-able ideas.

Next rank them in priority. List the one’s that will be done first, second, third and fourth.

You should also consider ways to salvage ideas that have potential. For example, can you make changes to an idea to make it workable? If not, do you think it could be workable at some future date? If so, file it away.

Some of those ideas could be profitable in the future. So, have a plan for filing or storing those types of ideas for future consideration.

Now you’ve picked out your most do-able ideas, filed away the ideas that may not be do-able now but may be in the future. The rest of the ideas should be thrown in the trash right? Wrong!

You should take one last look at the zany, wild, and looney ideas you have leftover. Can you make any of the ideas you have left fit into the future considerations category? What if you ...

1. Toned it down?

2. Applied it to something?

3. Combined it with something?

After considering the above questions, you may find an idea or two that can be moved into the future considerations category.  With a few changes, it may even be moved into the do-able category. If not, you may throw them out.

So, now the rest of the crazy, zany, and wild ideas you have left at this stage can be thrown away.

But throw them away with a sense of respect and dignity. Because in most cases it took the crazy, zany, and wild ideas to get to the profitable ideas. Next Page
